The Ducati 916 is a fully faired sports bike made by Ducati from 1994 to 1998. It featured a 916 cc fuel injected, 4-valve, liquid cooled, V-twin engine. It is also noted as one of the most beautiful bikes ever made.
The development of the 916 model family can be traced back to the development of the four-valve Ducati engine. The chief designer of the Ducati motorcycles since 1970s was Fabio Taglioni, who introduced the Pantah in 1979. The engine was updated in 1990s in the SuperSport series and all modern Ducati engines are derivatives of the Pantah, which used its camshafts to both open and close the engine’s valves, eliminating the usual valve closing spring.
The 916 Senna was first presented in the Bologna Motor Show in December 1994. It was a special edition to commemorate Formula 1 world champion, Ayrton Senna. He was an avid Ducati enthusiast who endorsed its release shortly before his death in May 1994.
Ducati won four Superbike World Championships with the 916, in 1994-1996, and in 1998, with riders Carl Fogarty and Troy Corser. Ducati won the Manufacturer’s Championship in all those years.
